        Who is Mauk

Meet Your Hiking Guide in Tenerife

My name is Mauk van de Waarsenburg, born and raised in Helmond, Netherlands. In 1998, I moved to Tenerife, a life-changing decision that allowed my passion for mountains, nature, and outdoor adventure to fully flourish.
Over the years, I have fully immersed myself in everything this island has to offer: trail running, climbing, canyoning, orienteering, and of course hiking, from relaxed nature walks to multi-day treks across rugged volcanic terrain.
As a certified hiking and mountain guide in Tenerife, I have completed various official trainings in Spain, including:

        • Certified Spanish Hiking Guide (Guía de Senderismo)
        • Specialization as a Mountain Guide (Guía de Montaña)
        • Qualified guide for Teide National Park, Tenerife, and Caldera de Taburiente National Park, La Palma
        • Canyoning guide training (outdoor activities in canyon areas)

I have also worked as a guide in an underground volcanic tunnel system, where I learned how the landscape is formed from the inside out – literally and figuratively.

My Vision: Personal, Authentic, and Sustainable
For me, hiking is not just about reaching the summit, but about the journey itself. That’s why all my hikes are small-scale, personal, and with great attention to people, nature, and culture. Sustainable tourism and support for the local economy are core values.
Tenerife is much more than just sun, sea, and sand. I am eager to show you the real island: laurel forests, volcanic mountain ranges, and hidden valleys, places where you can truly experience the tranquility of nature, far from the crowds.
I look forward to welcoming you on one of our guided hikes and discovering the heart of Tenerife together.

“It is not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves.” – Edmund Hillary
